Have a healthier Halloween with these tips

Between the costumes, spooky decorations, and festive treats, Halloween is definately fun! But the sugar overload? Not so much.

Luckily, it is possible to celebrate Halloween without a sugar coma. Try using some of these tips so you and your kids can have a healthier Halloween this year.

  • Fill up first. Feed your kids a healthy meal before trick or treating. The fuller their belly is, the less likely they’ll munch on candy while they’re walking!

  • Pick a smaller bag. Smaller bags = smaller candy hauls. Stay away from pillowcases and other large bags. Consider letting your kids pick a cute, smaller bag they’re excited to tote around.

  • Have a candy cutoff. Set a daily candy limit ahead of time so your kids are clear. And consider picking a “candy cutoff” date too for when the extra candy goes bye-bye.

  • Donate extra candy. Consider donating extra Halloween candy to a local fire or police station.

  • Try using the switch witch. This is a newer Halloween tradition that’s become pretty popular. Here’s how it works: after trick or treating, kids pick a set number of their favorite candies to keep. They leave the extras out for the “switch witch” to swap for a special toy or gift.
