Everyone loves their carbs right? Let’s talk about them.

Carbohydrates are a macronutrient that are found in certain foods and drinks. Carbs are your body’s main source of fuel. They give you the energy you need to function. It’s important for you to prioritize the right type of carbohydrates for your nutritional health.

There are 2 types of carbohydrates - simple and complex. Simple carbohydrates are digested quickly, causing blood sugars to spike and then crash. They are offer high in sugar and low in nutritional value. Eating too much of these can lead to weight gain and potentially diabetes. Complex carbohydrates are digested slowly, causing blood sugars to rise and then level out gradually. They are often high in fiber and other nutrients. Eating them actually helps prevent spikes in blood sugars.

Some examples :

Simple - candy, white bread, chips, pretzels, fruit juices, white rice, sweets

Complex - fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, oats, beans, whole grains, sweet potatoes, beans

Simple carbs aren’t all “bad”, but they do not nourish your body like complex carbohydrates do. It’s best to eat plenty of nutrient rich carbs and eat the simple carbs in moderation. And it’s also best to avoid foods with added sugars.

There isn’t a set RDA for carbohydrates. It all depends on your age, gender, activity level, and weight goals to determine how much you should be eating.
