When most people think about burning calories, they think about workouts : lifting weights, cardio sessions, classes, or runs. But there’s a powerful (and often very underestimated) piece of the energy-burn puzzle that happens outside the gym: Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis, or NEAT.

Understanding NEAT can be a game-changer for fat loss, maintenance, and overall health, especially if you already train consistently.

So what is NEAT?

NEAT is movement that happens naturally during the the day. It refers to the calories you burn through all physical activity that isn’t intentional exercise.

This includes things like:

  • Walking around your house or office

  • Standing instead of sitting

  • Cleaning, cooking, or doing laundry

  • Running errands

  • Fidgeting, pacing, or shifting positions

  • Playing with kids or pets

NEAT can vary by hundreds (sometimes thousands) of calories per day between individuals.

Two people can:

Eat the same calories and follow the same workout plan, but get very different results based solely on how much they move the rest of the day. For many people, NEAT actually accounts for more total daily calorie burn than structured exercise.

NEAT is the silent driver of daily calorie burn, and once you start paying attention to it, everything from fat loss to energy levels can improve.
