One thing that I love to do is meal prep. I love to put together healthy things that I love to eat, and to have them on hand and ready to go for throughout the week. I wanted to share my top 10 tips for successful meal prepping that I always keep in mind for myself when planning.
.) Make an inventory list of what you already have on hand in your house. Are there things you want to use up? Are there things that you forgot that you already have? This can prevent unnecessary buying and also reduce waste.
.) Keep a variety of your favorite spices on hand. I personally love Kinder's brand spices. They are 0 calorie and have a great variety of different spices that go so well on everything.
.) Invest in some good quality containers. You can go on Amazon and find packs of 10 glass meal prep containers ranging from $30 to $50. Thats where I got mine and I absolutely love them.
.) Go to the grocery store with a list. Know what you want to make and the ingredients you need. This will help you stay focused and prevent unnecessary spending.
.) Keep it simple! It doesn't need to be a complicated recipe.
.) Keep a baseline stock of staples on hand that last a long time. For instance - canned goods, frozen vegetables, whole grains (rice, oats, pasta), legumes, oils (no seed oils! i personally love Chosen Foods 0 calorie avocado oil cooking spray), baking essentials, and meat! I buy a ton of meat and freeze it into portion packs of what I know I will use for my meal prep batches.
.) Buy in bulk! Costco is my favorite.
.) Stay organized. Having an organized pantry, fridge, and freezer just makes things so much easier on yourself.
.) Make sure your meal preps are healthy! Emphasize lean proteins, whole grains, fruits, veggies, and just whole foods in general. Try to limit anything processed and things with added sugars.
.) Make the time. Set out a block of time just for this. It can be time consuming, but once you have a process down it gets easier. Eventually it will become a habit that you need to make sure you do.
I hope these tips help you start your meal prepping journey!
