Are you wondering how to help your body recharge postpartum? Getting enough electrolytes is a good place to start.

So what are electrolytes? Electrolytes are minerals with an electrical charge, often called the "spark plugs" of your body, as they play a important role in many bodily functions.

Everyone needs electrolytes for proper bodily function, but the demand for these essential minerals can increase significantly during childbirth and breastfeeding.

Electrolytes help with:

  • Fluid balance & hydration

  • Energy production

  • Muscle contraction

  • Nerve signaling

  • Tissue repair

  • Bone health

  • Mood regulation

  • Brain function

This is why are they important postpartum:

  • Replenish nutrients: You lose more electrolytes and trace minerals during pregnancy than in any other phase of life. Those lost nutrients need to be restored postpartum, especially if you’re breastfeeding.

  • Breastfeeding: To produce breastmilk, your body needs an extra liter of water per day -- roughly a gallon (16 cups) total. Hitting this mark can be tough for new moms. Electrolytes can help you stay hydrated, and add essential minerals to your breast milk. Win-win!

  • Stress: Postpartum is an exciting, but stressful time. And stress depletes minerals. Electrolytes help replenish these minerals.

  • Mood support: Electrolytes and other minerals are crucial for balancing your mood. Getting your fill may boost your mood postpartum.

  • Energy production: Minerals help your body create energy, which is a must for postpartum recovery!

If your body is in need of electrolytes it will send you some warning signs:

  • Headaches

  • Fatigue

  • Dizziness

  • Muscle cramps or spasms

  • Irregular heartbeat

  • Confusion or irritability

  • Diarrhea or constipation

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Poor milk supply

If you don't know where to start, I will give you some ideas below.
